Munich, Germany
Munich is one of our favorite European cities. It is a grand mix of old and new. We have been here several times before, so we will not be doing any sightseeing. We are here to visit with our friends, Ursula and Alfred.
We stayed at the Le Meridien Hotel right near the Marienplatz. The Marienplatz is the central square in the city center of Munich. It has been the city’s main square since the mid-12th century. Its occupants include the New Town Hall and Old Town Hall. A major attraction is the Glockenspiel, a tower in the new Town Hall. The pedestrian-only zone between the Marienplatz and Karlsplatz is home to dozens of German restaurants, beer halls, and tons of shops for all wallet sizes.
A quick word about the Glockenspiel, a major tourist attraction and must-see if you visit Munich. It is a mechanical clock famous for its life-sized characters. Three times daily, the characters of this enormous “coo-coo clock” reenact 2 specific scenes from Munich’s history (which I do not remember). The clock has 43 bells and 32 hand-carved characters, all set into motion at 11am, Noon and 5pm.
Do not miss a visit to this beautiful city center. It is Munich’s crowning gem.
On to where we ate….
We had dinner at the Hotel Louie Rooftop restaurant. It was fabulous! We also had dinner (twice, it was that good) at the Spatenhaus where the sausages and sauerkraut are to die for!
Ursula and Alfred treated us to a delicious barbeque at their house where we enjoyed their gorgeous garden and some delicious German-style barbeque. Danke Schoen, Ursula and Alfred!
We are spending the last night of our 4-month Odyssey at the Moxy Hotel near the Munich Airport, from where our flight leaves tomorrow morning bright and early. The Moxy is a lower-end Marriott property but NOT low-end. Great place to stay with comfortable beds, clean rooms, cool community spaces, and great service from the staff. Located around the world, Moxy is great value.
